At glenridge elementary school sugar skull having parties, it’s a time to think about the day of the dead and your loved ones.

Why do we do this?

It’s not just the sweet sugar to eat, it’s also a way to express the day of the dead. We decorate them, in ways that they liked to do.

Where are you?

When you are making tasty sugar skulls, you are in the spanish room. But in mexico, you go to a building or a graveyard(where ever your friend or family member is).

What's in it?

Just some white sugar, merengue powder, water, and if you ever want some treat sugar skulls or not there you have em’.

When do we do this?

We do this a little after the day of the dead.

But in Mexico, it could be somewhere near or on the day of the dead.

Who does this?

We make sugar skulls.

imagine a world without limits, and it's all in front of you. A machine that can allow you to shoot aliens, make a virtual house, and it's all with a tiny computer.

Vr is a device that with a phone and cardboard container, you can see different worlds.Vr is also well  star wars for example, you can control where you look.the vr screen is about an inch away from your face. The screen is held by you or a strap. With a virtual reality headset, you can see cartoon worlds and shows.you are able to look all around the room. With augmented reality, it is exactly the same except you can interact with the fictional world.

There are a lot of ways people use AR and VR. People use vr to let customers see what there kichon whould look like before they buy it.You can use VR to wach movies like star wars, but control where you look. And therapists use it to make their patents focus on only the VR and not the real world. AR can help us by teaching some of us how to cook and do construction.         How could vr help us in the future?  I interviewed MR.Ed Morrissey. He is an executive in eternity in st.louis, said “ I think VR could help us in the future because we could use it for pro-sports and you could watch at your house like you were actually there, without having to spend money on tickets and having to be on time.”

Augmented reality products are more expensive than virtual reality ones. Microsoft made a hollow lens that costs 3000 dollars. Vuzix made smart glasses. The smart glasses are 1000 dollars. Virtual reality rift headset costs 599. You can create your own virtual reality headset by using your phone and vr goggles.VR  goggles range between 10 and 500 dollars.

VR and AR will someday be a big part of our lives.

Pokemon Go,ever played? In 2016 it was the most popular game in St.Louis, but now, not very many people are playing.  Because of this, the Niantic team, the creator of Pokemon Go,  is making a lot of changes.  This update is scheduled to be at the end of December.

There are 100 new kinds of pokemon being added to Pokemon Go.  the niantic team,     did not say specifically what kinds of pokemon will be in the game now, but they will open it at the end of December.

They are making Ditto easier to catch.The Niantic team has made it so if you catch a Pidgey you might have caught a Ditto. If someone has caught a Ditto, its true form will appear for other players in the area.

Most people hate rattatas and pidgeys.  So the Niantic  team has decided to make less of them.Niantic also said  they won’t put them in eggs.

In conclusion, if you are someone who stopped playing,well I hope these points will make you want to play again.

Mannequin Challenge

Mannequin Challenge Goes World Wide

You may have heard of the Mannequin Challenge. Well if you haven’t it’s a worldwide thing where you get into a pose and hold it for as long as you can while someone comes around and films you, Usually if you see a video of people doing the Mannequin Challenge you hear the song Black Beatles but people also use other songs.

The Mannequin Challenge was started by a group of teenagers in Jacksonville, Florida. The group of teenagers thought it would be fun to stay really still like mannequins and make videos to post on social media.  People all over the world are doing it, even celebrities.

You may have seen schools doing it as well, but one school Glenridge Elementary, did it a little different. What they did was they have been reading Non-Fiction books and by what book they were reading they they got into groups and acted out a scene while a teacher came and filmed them. The students thought it was a fun experience. Here are a few other kids thoughts “It was fun but I wish we could choose what poses we wanted to do” Anna and Josie agreed. “I wish it was longer because it felt so short and it was so fun” says Amanda.

You might be wondering why people are doing the Mannequin Challenge. Well as I said people all over the world a doing it. Famous people are doing it, then other people try it, and the more people do it  the more people try it.

Peace Loops

At Glenridge Elementary School in the month of November there are these things about peace loops that Mrs. Spann made so when you do something nice or good or peceful you will get one most of the time.

Your kids might be coming home that is why I am informing you about this. At the end of November Mrs. Spann colects all of the peace  loops and starts putting them on a tenis ball that has the school year and the fifth grade classes names on it, it kind of looks like a pac man because she cuts out some of the ball and fills it with what peace means to you that we wrote on small pieces of paper.

Mrs. Scotino said that she likes the idea but it should be all year long because you should try to be peceful all year long not the month of November well that wraps up the news.

Super Moon

The Supermoon is when the Moon is super close to Earth. It is also when the Moon is super bright. That is why they call it a Super Moon.

Old Tower

The Supermoon only happens 1 time every year. It’s hard not to see. You can go up in a tower to see it. The tower is only open when the superMoon has arrived. You can go to the very top.

Walking

If you are going to the tower you might want to bring walking shoes because there are exactly 98 steps you have to climb up! And that is just for the inside. You also might want to bring a jacket because the Moon happens in October at night.

Using Knowledge

Now that you know so much about the Supermoon is it something you will look forward to seeing? When the Supermoon comes up again you can still go up to the tower. Even if you don’t go up to the tower you can still see the Moon from your house.

It’s more than just standing, it’s acting out a frozen scene {without BLINKING} from a movie or book.{You also can’t talk, laugh, or make noise[it’s hard!]}

Okay, I have another question for you: What did the fifth grade Glenridge Elementary students do????

{Surprise} Answer:THE MANNEQUIN CHALLENGE!! The fifth graders at Glenridge acted {in a frozen pose} a scene from different books. There were props and costumes. One guy even made his hair all wet!

Was Hard Or Not???

I personally thought it was kind of hard because I had to kneel in one position for about FIVE MINUTES. “I thought it was cool. It incorporated learning,” said Lucia del Pilar, a fifth grader at Glenridge Elementary.”It was fun,” agrees Anna Stouffer,” but I wish we could have chosen our own poses.”Samara Landy says it was fun and interesting.”I thought is was really cool how we got to pick the scene from the book and how we acted it out and posed ourselves.”

      What is the Mannequin Challenge

Have you ever walked past a store and seen a mannequin in the window?, well if you have that is what you are trying to look like when you do the Mannequin Challenge. The Mannequin Challenge is where you get in a pose that would look like you were in the middle of doing something, but instead of moving you stay still like a Mannequin. You are probably thinking so we just stand still forever, well you chose someone to film you to the song Black Beatles by Rae Sremmurd, or really to whatever song you want.

  A Great Experience

The 5 grade teachers at Glenridge Elementary decided to do the Mannequin Challenge. Mrs. Scotino, a 5 grade at Glenridge Elementary, quoted, “The Mannequin Challenge was really Mrs. Mcqueens {a 5 grade teacher at Glenridge Elementary} idea, also we thought it would be a fun idea to get people engaged in learning.”

So for the theme the 5 graders they picked a scene in their book and that's what they were trying to imitate while they did the Mannequin Challenge.

Why do the Mannequin Challenge

Why should you do the Mannequin Challenge? The Mannequin Challenge is a good way to have fun with other people, it's also so exciting because you don't know if the camera is coming to you or if you or someone else is going to mess up. The Mannequin Challenge is also a great way to learn more about working together because you have to work out your poses, also you have to figure out who is going to film and what the video is going to look like.

Epley and beckham’s 11 birthday

On november 19, 2016 It was epley and beckham’s birthday. Their  real birthday is on novembre 20, (but their dad would not be in town, so they had it the day before their actual birthday). They invited all their friends, but some couldn't come :( but most could! They were having a paintball party. They were waiting for their friends to come over. The first person to come over was tatum. They wanted to play football while they were waiting. So, they got a football and started to play. In minutes, everyone was there, so they decided to play a mini game.  After they were all ready, they went to wacky warriors.

When they were all there, they had an instructor. He taught them how to play and the rules. The rules were: no taking your mask off! Second rule, no shooting the referee, and last, do not shoot your teammates. they all agreed to follow the rules and they went. The first game was in the brick yard. It was a course with bricks everywhere. they picked teams and went. The first game was long, but one team had their sniper the last man standing, and he didn't know it. He got shot and the other team won. Lots of the games went like that, except one game. That game was on the clearing. A huge course in the woods. Epley and jake and tatum were an unstoppable force. They destroyed the other team. After the paintball, they all had snacks and cupcakes. It was their best birthday party ever.

Fall is usually the time of year where weather transitions from warm to cold. Fall is like a nice warm and cold mixture. But, 2016 is different.

How is 2016 different?

Last Thursday, November 17, it was a high of 80°, shorts weather. This weekend, November 19 and 20, has been around 30° to 40º.  A lot of people are blaming it on global warming. Is that the case here?

Global Warming

What is Global Warming? Google’s definition is “A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants.” Some real world examples are: Sea ice not freezing as far out or as thick, which is bad for polar bears, life on the planet is causing ocean temperatures to warm, sea levels to rise which means places on the coasts could be under water in less than 15 years. Weather is climate, and human activities are making the climate get dangerously hot. To find more information, click here.

Typical Weather

Scientist say that “2016 will be the warmest year on record”, according to TIME.com. And we have already witnessed this while finishing Fall.”  Research site usclimatedata.com shows that the average high is 55ºF and the average low is 38ºF in November. This past Fall has had a weather swing; we have had either very hot or very cold, we have not had typical Fall weather.

Helping the Homeless

Helping the Homeless

Homeless. We know that word. We’ve seen people asking, pleading for the bare essentials. BUT, who has actually taken the time to help them? The students at Glenridge Elementary have been working to try and at least help a few homeless shelters. During the month of October, students have been encouraged to bring in small donations and socks for the homeless.

No Place to Call Home

In the U.S. alone, 600,000 people live without a home. That is why fifth graders at Glenridge Elementary have set up a fundraiser to benefit the homeless. Now that October is over, the fundraiser is over too. During the month of October they have collected  $1,000 and 200 pairs of socks! More than anyone thought they would.

Decisions, Decisions

After the big fundraiser, the fifth grade teachers had to decide where the money and socks would go. After a good, long search, the fifth grade teachers came to a decision. half of the socks and the money would go to the Covenent house and the other half of the socks and money would go to Epworth youth centers.

What are the Shelters?

As a “thank you”, one presenter from each shelter came to talk to the fifth graders about how they impacted the community. So, do you want to learn more about the shelters? If so, read on. Both the Epworth and Covenent shelters are for kids. At Epworth, kids from 11 to 20 are eligible to get free meals and classes. “Over 30% of the kids in the Normandy School District are homeless.”  Said presenter Michael Sue. Ms. Michael Sue went on to say that Epworth and Covenent are kind of connected. They also learned that Epworth is celebrating its 152nd year. And, how there are 12 different locations. Covenant is a shelter for people 16 to 22 years old, with over 4,500 people. Mr. Miles from the Covenant Center helps out because he has a passion for helping young people.

“I Feel Proud”

The Glenridge fifth graders are most definitely role models to the kindergarten through 4th grade students. “Being a fifth grader means that lots of younger kids look up to us. I hope doing this fundraiser inspired them.”  Said 5th grader Anna S. Helping the homeless made most fifth graders feel good. “ I feel proud because we did something kind to help others I think we really impacted the community.”  said another fifth grader Julia M. Amanda M. says “ I'm glad we helped keep the homeless warm and impacted the community a lot.” One message fifth grade teachers were trying to send to the students was that even as a fifth grader they can make a difference in the world. Fifth grader Lucia d.P. agrees with the teachers and said “ Everyone that has made a difference in our world is older than us, but I think that we've proved to a lot of younger kids that we can also make a difference.  I think we had an important mission-- It was more than just collecting  socks, it was being a role model to others.”

Continue to Help!

Just because Epworth and Covenent have 100 pairs of socks and $500, we can't just think that they have everything that they need. Even small donations will make a big difference to the homeless community. Talk to people who work at a local homeless shelter to find out what they need, or to sign up to volunteer.
